Portsmouth, OH (PRWEB) November 18, 2004 -- Local mother launches online shopping mall. Recently widowed, Barbara King, a retired programmer analyst, decided it was time to get busy and get started with a new chapter in her life. With a life long love for computers and programming, she decided that she could start an online business. With determination and a strong desire to have her own business, she purchased a few books and jumped right in to coding her first web pages. She chose an online mall, because many of her local friends did not know much about surfing around on the internet, and she thought bringing some of the internet’s most popular stores together under one roof would be just the thing. The idea became reality, and thus A Mom’s Shop was born. A Mom’s Shop has been online just two months, but is expanding and now includes Gifts of Praise which is a Christian gift shop with over 3000 products.. There is a Christmas Shop inside Gift Of Praises, as well as lots of handmade items like baby blankets, candles, and home decor. Barbara has recently added T-Shirts with a Personal touch, with over a thousand graphics you can choose from to have printed on your shirt of choice. Besides t-shirts, there are sweatshirts, long sleeve tees, aprons, and tote bags. She has five teddy bear shops and a Baby Attitude shop that sells funny baby onesie’s. You can access all the shops thru the main web site, A Mom’s Shop. Barbara has offered low cost advertising for other mom’s that want to get exposure for their products or services, and she has listed just under a hundred legitimate business opportunities on her website to help others find a work from home job. When you shop thru A Mom’s Shop you are helping to support the efforts of moms that want to make a difference. We have great talents that we can share with you. | Local Woman-Owned Business Brings Breast Cancer Awareness to Women Across the Country & the Globe |

This month-long event is taking place on InternetBasedMoms.com, a community of work at home moms who network and share resources to build their online businesses. In October 2004, this community is banding together to bring awareness of breast cancer and raise funds for breast cancer charities. The event includes breast cancer information, resources and stories of inspirational moms who have battled breast cancer. Fundraisers include a number of mom entrepreneurs that are donating a generous portion of their sales to select breast cancer charities. González is personally contributing to this event by promoting it locally in Puerto Rico and donating a portion of her sales during Breast Cancer Awareness Month, October 2004. Despite the growing awareness of breast cancer, there are still women who do not take advantage of early detection of breast cancer at all and others who do not get screening mammograms and clinical breast exams at regular intervals. According to the organization, National Breast Cancer Awareness Month (NBCAM), “If all women age 40 and older took advantage of early detection methods – mammography plus clinical breast exam – breast cancer death rates would drop much further, up to 30 percent. The key to mammography screening is that it be done routinely – once is not enough.” Says Gonzalez, “I lost one aunt to breast cancer and another one had a mastectomy years ago, she’s a survivor, but what I’ve learned from this is that early detection makes all the difference.” Mind, Body and Paw can be found on the World Wide Web at MindBodyAndPaw.com Full Breast Cancer Awareness Event details can be found at internetbasedmoms.com |

Hello Moms! This month one of the home business ideas I want to tell you about is one that many women I know are doing successfully. That is becoming a Virtual Assistant. A Virtual Assistant (VA) is basically an online secretary or administrative assistant, but you work for clients as an independent contractor which means that you need to take care of your own taxes and healthcare. If you have computer skills, are able to multi-task and can dedicate a good portion of every day to being online and on your computer - you could easily build a home business as a Virtual Assistant. There are many good job sites where you can bid on initial work. A general rule of thumb when looking for work at home opportunities is never to pay for work. This makes sense, and good job boards such as elance are one of the few exceptions I would recommend. When I began working from home as a Virtual Assistant I joined a well known job board called elance. This is where I found most of my ongoing clients. Their rates have gone up over the years, but so has the amount of jobs that get posted there. In my opinion it is well worth the investment. Most of you know that my husband recently joined me in working from home. We needed to acquire some new clients and decided get an elance membership (I had let mine expire over a year ago). As a testament to their service, within two days we were awarded three different small jobs and have already found two ongoing clients from that membership. I recommend that you check it out, build a strong portfolio to include that lists your references, job experience, education etc. and purchase a membership. We went with a three month basic subscription which has more then paid for itself. This is a good starting point for finding clients and beginning to work as a virtual assistant and an avenue I personally endorse as viable. Thanks for reading the FreelanceMom news - I hope you find some tips useful to you. Best wishes for your business!
P.S. Check out the following articles for more information:
The Global Work Marketplace - The revolution of how work gets done The reality is, for thousands of people, this change has already occurred. Internet based 'Service Auctions' now abound where businesses can post their ongoing jobs or one-time projects to a global market of freelance professionals, a.k.a. - 'Service Providers'. The service providers then bid on the work, adorn the bid with their 'pitch' and online portfolio and viola! What commonly takes weeks to accomplish and thousands of dollars in payroll and advertising revenue... can take a business as little as a day with no overhead costs at all.
Search engines remain the #1 way people use to locate you on the Internet. Over the past several years, search engines have under gone some major changes. Many of the free ones are gone and indexing has become more sophisticated. Yet, our web site has remained in the top ten ranking for the past 4 years with very little maintenance. I have a business to run and don't have time to play search engine ranking games. First forget trying to trick search engines. This is a big waste of time. Search engines soon catch on and you'll lose that ranking or worse yet...get your site banned from the search engine index. Secondly, forget about always being #1. Algorithms constantly change and it can become a full time job attempting to maintain a number one ranking. We constantly go from #1 to #10. As long as we stay on the top ten search results which is the first page of the search engine, I am happy. How Did We Do It?
